Introduction
Welcome back, wonderfully creative minds of the HEK DAO community! Get ready to charge up your artistic spirit and make your mark. We've got several exciting open-calls coming your way. Good news: in this season of Friends of HEK we have expanded the decision making activities! On this page, you will find all you need to know about making your voice heard in this season of Friends of HEK, starting with a summary of this year's activities:
Friends of HEK Token Design:
Starting on April 29th until May 13th, 2024, it’s your chance to propose dazzling artists, including yourselves, to craft a new visual identity for the Friends of HEK Token 2024, i.e. the face of the token.
The above image shows the Friends of HEK token with a placeholder image; this is what you will see in your wallet if you bought your token in ETH. The selected artist will create two to three artworks, and these will be voted on by the Friends of HEK members. The winning artwork will replace the placeholder image and represent the Friends of HEK for the entire season! More precise information about the open call and voting procedures can be found below.
(NEW) Open Call for Open Projects:
In this season of Friends of HEK we want to experiment further by opening up member driven project proposals. Whether you want to invite a specific guest to give a talk, propose an exhibition or research project, it’s up to you! Ultimately, you will need to come up with a project proposal that is appropriate for the scope of the Friends of HEK 2024 season. What does this mean? Make it clear what resources would be needed, project timelines and have a focused idea. More information about the possibilities and limitations will follow closer to the open-call start. Keep in mind that the projects will be funded by the Friends of HEK 2024 treasury and will not be additionally funded by HEK.
virtual.hek.ch & (NEW) HEK.Edition:
Just like in the last season of Friends of HEK, you will be able to propose an exhibition on virtual.hek.ch! This could be a solo-show or group show, it’s completely up to you. The guidelines are very similar to the above described face of the Friends of HEK 2024 Token decision making activity. So, you can use this as a reference for now. In addition to the online show in HEK’s digital exhibition space, you will also be able to propose an artist featured either in the solo-show or group show to create an NFT edition. Face of the Friends of HEK Token Guide
Let's dive in and see how you can shape the visual identity of Friends of HEK 2024. In the below paragraphs we will guide you through the stages of the first decision making activity of this season of Friends of HEK. You will notice that after the artist proposal stage, those who have purchased the token with fiat (regular currency) and who do not yet have an Ethereum-compatible wallet with their token in it, have a slightly different process for voting. If you want to take full ownership of your token but don’t yet have a wallet and want our help, you can book a 1:1 online session via email: friends(at)hek.ch If you’ve set up a wallet but don’t have your token yet, send us your wallet address! We will airdrop/send it to you ASAP.

Who can make Artist Proposals?
All Friends of HEK 2024 members can share artist proposals in the Discord submissions-face-of-token-2024 forum channel during the open-call phase.
Artist Proposal Guidelines
Artist Profiles: You can submit any kind of artist you like, just keep in mind their task is to create an artwork that will work as the face of the Friends of HEK token. This requires that the artist has some knowledge of NFTs, so we encourage proposing those who fit this profile.
Artist Interest and Contactability: Ensure that the artists you're submitting would be interested in creating the face of our token. Submit only those artists who have reachable contact information, allowing us to get in touch with them.
Artist Groups and Collectives: Artist groups and collectives are more than welcome to be nominated! We appreciate the diversity they bring to our options.
Self-Submission: Don’t hesitate to put yourself in the running! If you're an artist, you can absolutely nominate yourself.
How to Submit an Artist Proposal
Discord Forum: To submit an artist proposal, check out the Submissions & Voting category in the Friends of HEK Discord; here you’ll find the submissions-face-of-token-2024 forum. Posts made outside of this channel will not be voted on.
Comprehensive Submissions: When submitting, please include links to the artists' portfolios, social media profiles, or any other relevant websites. Adding visual materials like artworks, sketches, or samples showcasing the artist's style and talent would be fantastic. We ask you to keep everything you want to submit for the artist proposal in one post. This makes it easier for everyone to have a clear overview.
Submission Limits: Feel free to submit one or more artists, but let's keep it within a range of one to five submissions per person.
Preselection: Choosing your Favorites with Emojis

Preselection: Only a preselection of ten artist proposals will be voted on. Therefore, over the duration of the artist proposal period you will need to express support for your favorites.
Express Your Favorites with 🌈: Click on the 🌈 reaction emoji to vote for your top choices in the Friends of HEK submissions-face-of-token-2024 Discord forum. You can vote for multiple artists, including your own artist proposals.
The Selection Process: After submissions and preselection have concluded, we'll tally up the votes. The ten artists with the most :rainbow: clicks will advance to the next stage. If there are ten or less artist proposals, all will advance to the next stage of snapshot voting.
Phase 1 Voting: Artist Selection
14.05. – 16.05.24: Non-wallet holders
15.05. – 17.05.24: Wallet-holders
Once we make it past the artist proposal stage, it’s time to vote! We are keeping the voting period short (& sweet). We are all very eager to find out what the face of the Friends of HEK token will look like, so set the dates in your calendar now.
Who can vote: All Friends of HEK 2024 token-holders can cast their vote to decide on the final artist for the Face of HEK token.
What’s being voted on: Once the artist proposal stage closes, the Friends of HEK admins will input the artist proposals into Snapshot. Snapshot is an “off-chain voting platform that allows DAOs, DeFi protocols, or NFT communities to vote easily and without gas fees.” Voting will start on the 14th of May for non-wallet holders and the 15th of May for wallet-holders in the Friends of HEK Discord within the channels defined below. The chosen artist will present between two-three artwork drafts for the face of the Friends of HEK token. A second phase of voting will follow where members will vote for their favorite artwork of those presented.
We have separated the voting guidelines into two categories, one for Friends of HEK token holders who have an Ethereum-compatible wallet with their token and one for Friends of HEK members who purchased their token in fiat (regular currency) via our e-guma ticketing site.
How to Vote: Wallet Holders
Head over to the Submissions & Voting category of Discord: here you’ll find all of the channels associated with the vote; they will be viewable starting on May 15th, 2024.
Cast your vote with Snapshot: In the Vote-with-your-wallet channel, you’ll see a notification from the Collab.land bot that a vote proposal has been created. Click ‘Proposal’ to be taken to the current voting proposal. Connect your wallet and sign the transaction to vote. (You can also click the ‘Space’ link to be taken HEK’s Snapshot space and from there view the current proposal).
Type of voting: Weighted voting is the approach that is being taken with this season of the Friends of HEK DAO. This is so that Friends of HEK members who do not yet have a crypto wallet can participate too. HEK is currently holding their tokens, so we will use a custodial wallet to cast their votes for them. It’s likely that not everyone will vote the same way, and weighted voting allows us to allocate these tokens to the relevant artist.
Weighted voting does mean that theoretically you could split up your vote amongst many artist proposals; however, we recommend you not to do this, as your choice will have less of an impact on the final outcome. But ultimately, it’s up to you. That’s it, cast your vote!
How to Vote: Crypto-cautious/curious (no Ethereum wallet)
If you bought the HEK token with fiat (regular state-controlled currency e.g. Swiss Francs, Euros or US Dollars) online or in person at HEK, we have minted and are storing your token for you. This specific token is bound to your contact details and you have access to Friends of HEK through your Discord username. You have the same benefits and privileges as token holders who have a crypto wallet but the voting process looks slightly different.
Vote via Google Forms: We will share a Google Form via e-mail for all non-wallet holders. You will have the same selection as those who are voting via Snapshot.
Type of voting: You can cast one vote to select your favorite artist proposal! Simply select your preference in the form.
How your vote is cast: The voting period for non-wallet holders starts one day earlier, and closes one day earlier than those with wallets. So, from the 14th until 16th of May, it’s your chance to vote. This is because we are holding your token for you and will cast your votes for you with your token via Snapshot. This process takes a bit of time, so to ensure your vote is counted we need a day to add them.
If you want to take full ownership of voting and set-up an Ethereum wallet, we are here to help! We are offering 1:1 online sessions to guide you through the steps of setting-up a Metamask wallet. These sessions are free and can be booked here in English or German: friends@hek.ch. If you want to vote with your own wallet, with or without our help, we fully encourage you! However, you must communicate your wallet address to us by the 10th of May 2024, so we can send your token in time. Send us an email or write to us in the Friends of HEK Discord if you have questions!
Phase 2 Voting: Artwork Selection
Artist Participation: From May 17th the winning artist will be contacted by HEK. We will let the community know who the winner is but this will also be visible in Snapshot! The artist will have around a month to make 2-3 artwork proposals. If the winning artist declines, we will contact the second most popular artist and so on. We will keep you updated in Discord.
Voting: The voting process is exactly the same here as it was for phase 1 voting. This second phase of voting will take place once we receive the artwork drafts. We will keep you up to date, but hopefully this will be at the start of June.
Revealing Face of Token: We will reveal the selected artwork for the Friends of HEK token once the above voting has been completed. You will see the new face of your token in your wallet and we will share the winning artwork across all our communication channels.
Compensation: The winning artist who chooses to participate will be awarded with CHF1000. Once the Friends of HEK 2024 season is complete, members are welcome to sell their tokens. All royalties from the secondary market will go to the artist.

Processes may need to change along the way, for example in the case that there is a tie when selecting an artist or artworks. If this happens we will have to do further rounds of voting.
